Times of Change

More than 54 years had passed since Cuba is under a dictatorship, a system where a small group of people decide the destiny of more than eleven million of its citizens.  Something similar takes place in the US regarding to Cuba. Americans are not allowed to travel to Cuba without a permit, open a business there or have any kind of interaction without needing to have a document from the US government saying that they are authorized to do so. It is time for the United States government to lift the embargo against Cuba. In the 50 years the embargo had taken place, it hasn’t produced any good result for the Cuban people, on the contrary, it supplements the Cuban dictatorship in keeping the people isolated from the rest of the world. If Americans could freely go to Cuba, they would then be able to influence the people and change the vision that the Cuban government had imposed upon then through years of communist propaganda against the US. It’s really a shame that American citizens are not allowed to send monetary support to individuals in Cuba; it would be a good way to help members of the opposition who have lost their job because of their democratic ideas. The embargo against Cuba had not brought democracy to the island, but it had made the life of the Cuban people much harder and the government’s attempt to control its citizens even easier.  It is time to take a new approach, one that really takes into consideration both Americans and Cubans.
